Nathan Blecharczyk und Lisa Dubost von AirBnB
Im Süden von San Francisco sitzt die Zentrale von AirBnB, des schnell wachsenden Portals zur Vermietung privater Wohnungen. Mein Arbeitgeber Axel Springer hat sich im vergangenen Jahr an dem Unternehmen beteiligt. Gegründet von zwei Designern und einem Programmierer (Nathan Blecharczyk, siehe Foto), legt AirBnB Wert auf gut gestaltete Büros. Vergangene Woche habe ich mit drei Kollegen die Zentrale besucht. Hier einige Fotos:
Von außen sieht AirBnB ganz gewöhnlich aus. Ein grauer Zweckbau, dem man Anleihen am Bauhaus nur mit viel gutem Willen unterstellen kann:
Auch aus anderer Perspektive wirkt das Haus eher schlicht. Zumindest verzichtet es auf kolonialen Kitsch und postmoderne Tonnen-Ornamentik, die viele Neubauten in Nord-Kalifornien prägt. Von der Rafinesse des Interieurs ist hier noch nichts zu spüren:
Das Gebäude liegt im Süden San Franciscos einen Steinwurf von Zygna entfernt. In diesem Stadtviertel hat die Stadt eine Sonderwirtschaftszone geschaffen, in der bestimmte, nach Kopfzahl bemessene Steuern nicht in voller Höhe erhoben werden. Das erleichtert schnell wachsenden Unternehmen den Personalaufbau und konnte die Abwanderungen junger Firmen ins 40 Kilometer weiter südlich liegende Silicon Valley bremsen:
Der Parkplatz mit einem großen Wandgemälde, das vermutlich nicht von AirBnB, sondern seinen Nachbarn stammt. AirBnB hätte wohl ein weniger gewöhnliches Sujet gewählt:

Autoparken im boomenden Hightech-Süden der Stadt ist schwer, und seine Fahrräder bringt man am besten gleich mit nach oben:
Gegenüber des Mitarbeiterbaums, gleich hinter der Rezeption, steht der auf 80 Prozent der Originalgröße verkleinerte Nachbau einer Hütte, die man bei AirBnB mieten kann. Das Haus ist begehbar und enthält ein Hochbett, in dem vier Leute Platz finden. Erinnern soll das Haus Mitarbeiter und Besucher an den Zweck des Unternehmens: Gastgeber und Gäste zusammenzubringen und Gastlichkeit zu erzeugen. Leidenschaft für das Produkt liegt dem Team am Herzen. Die Gründer sprechen sogar von „Liebe“, und verlangen von jedem, der dabei sein will, dass er ebenfalls Liebe in seine Arbeit investiert:
AirBnB war kaum gegründet, da fertigten die Gründer, ihrerseits begabte Designer, spaßeshalber Cornflakes-Schachteln mit Barack Obama …
… und John McCain an. Die Artefakte stehen heute im Eingang des Unternehmens:
Hinter den Cornflakes-Schachteln eine Wand mit ausgewählten Presseberichten über AirBnB, übrigens alle aus gedruckten Medien. Dieser Artikel schildert, wie Brian Chesky, Jahrgang 1981, Geld in die Kasse seiner Wohngemeinschaft brachte, indem er während einer Designkonferenz in San Francisco ein Zimmer untervermietete. Eine Luftmatratze und ein Frühstück – Airbed and Breakfast -, das war das Konzept der Anfangstage. Das Portal fand sofort Anhänger. Mehr und mehr Touristen und Geschäftsleute wollten den anonymen Hotels entkommen und in privater Athmosphäre übernachten:

Ihre Meisterstücke hat das Team mit den Konferenzräumen abgeliefert. Jeder sieht anders aus, und jeder ist auf eine andere Art und Weise originell:

Auf einem Tisch vor den Konferenzräumen liegen Designbücher zum Durchblättern. Sie verraten Anspruch und Kennerschaft:
Für die Inneneinrichtung gibt es eine eigenes Team. Sie richtet alle Büros auf der Welt so ein, dass jedermann sofort spürt: Dies ist eine besondere Firma. Hier hält man sich gern auf, und hier arbeitet man gern lange. In dieser Ecke des großen Büros dient ein PanAm-Rumpfstück als Raumteiler:
Die Mitarbeiter sitzen anders als in den meisten amerikanischen Firmen nicht in Cubicles, sondern an langen Tischen mit vergleichsweise großen Arbeitsflächen. Platzangst kommt hier nicht auf:

Einmal pro Woche trifft sich die gesamte Belegschaft im Auditorium. Alle Außenstellen werden per Video zugeschaltet. Neue Features werden vorgestellt und neue Pläne geschmiedet:
Witz oder echte Schlafgelegenheit? Beides. Diese Übernachtungsbox hat mal jemand aus Spaß gebastelt, aber jetzt wird sie hin und wieder auch benutzt:
Gutes Essen ist wichtig für die Stimmung. Ein eigener Koch richtet jeden Mittag ein Buffet aus gesunden Gerichten an. Wenn er fertig ist, schlägt er an die Glocke und alles strömt herbei:
Man bedient sich selbst und zahlt nichts. Das Essen geht aufs Haus:
Zum Essen geht niemand anderswo hin. Alle finden Platz an den langen Tischen mitten im Büro:
Und hier Nathan und Lisa noch einmal. Nathan ist der Cheftechniker. Er hat den Code der ersten AirBnB-Version geschrieben, und auch heute laufen zentrale Funktionen wie Buchen oder Zahlen immer noch über seine damalige Entwicklung. Inzwischen leitet er ein großes Technik-Team, das neue Feature programmiert. Lisa verantwortet die internationale Expansion:

Aber im Ernst: Ich glaube, diese Konferenzräume und Büros sind noch nicht einmal teurer als konventionelle Ausstattungen, vermutlich sogar billiger (obwohl ich das nicht überprüft habe). Normale Büromöbel gehen sehr ins Geld. Gut ausgewählte Sammlerstücke kosten oft weniger. Wie zum Beispiel dieser Stahlschwinger aus den 20er Jahren in meinem Büro: War damals beim Antiquitätenhändler schneller und preiswerter zu haben als ein konventioneller Gästesessel.
