Ist es Zufall oder Strategie, dass Google seine eigenen Produkte wie Finance, Maps oder Shopping in der Suchergebnisliste von Google Search vor allen Wettbewerbern platziert? Ein Video der damaligen Entwicklungschefin Marissa Mayer liefert ein weiteres Indiz dafür, dass die Selbstbevorzugung Teil eines strategischen Konzepts ist. Das Video stammt vom Juni 2007. Die Top-Managerin sagt dort als Antwort auf eine Frage aus dem Publikum:
So the question was: On our stock quotes when you type in different tickers you see the little charts appear on the top of the page. And we used to have Yahoo first, and now Google is first. And I think the answer was that, if I recall history correctly, we didn’t have Google Finance until about a year ago. So up until then, we were actually ordering the links based on various published metrics like comScore and MediaMetrics, so we had the five top finance sites listed in the order of their popularity up there. So when we rolled out Google Finance, we put the Google link first.
So it seems only fair, right? We do all the work for the search page and all these other things, so we do put it first. But – and that’s actually been a policy, then, because of Finance we implant in other places. So for Google Maps again, it’s the first link, and so on and so forth. And after that, it’s ranked usually by popularity.
